Trust the Timing: A Story of Two Travelers and Why Everything Happens for a Reason

Some things in life arrive without an explanation. A door closes. A plan falls apart. Something we worked hard for slips away, and we are left holding the question: why?

I have thought about that question many times. I don’t have a neat answer, but I do know a story that comes close. It is about two travelers, and I’d like to share it with you.

The two travelers

The two travelers

Long ago, two men set out on a journey together.

The first was young, full of energy and curious about everything. He had seen a lot, and he had learned a great deal, but there were deep parts of the world he had never been shown.

The second traveler was different. He had walked far beyond the ordinary roads. He had been to places most people never learn exist, and he carried knowledge that did not come from books or from his own effort. It was given to him by the One who owns all knowledge, and he understood things about the universe that stay hidden from the rest of us.

The young traveler wanted to learn from him. So he asked if he could come along.

The older one looked at him kindly and said, “You can come, but you will not be able to stay patient with what you see. You will have questions, and you won’t understand.”

“I’ll be patient,” the young man said. “I won’t question you.”

“Then here is the condition,” said the older traveler. “Don’t ask me about anything until I explain it myself.”

The young traveler agreed. They set off.

The first strange thing

They came to the shore and boarded a boat that belonged to a few poor people who worked the water for a living. As they crossed, the older traveler quietly made a hole in the boat’s hull.

The young traveler could not hold back. “Why would you do this? You’ll drown the people on board. That is a terrible thing to do.”

The older traveler only looked at him. “Did I not tell you that you would not be able to be patient with me?”

The young man felt ashamed. “Forgive me,” he said. “I forgot. Please don’t hold it against me.”

They continued.

The second strange thing

Further along the road, they met a boy playing alone. Without explaining what he was doing, the older traveler did something that ended the boy’s life.

This was too much. “How could you? He had done nothing. This is wrong, completely wrong!”

“Did I not tell you,” the older one said again, “that you would not be able to be patient with me?”

The young traveler lowered his head. “If I ask you about anything else after this, then leave me. You will have a fair excuse.”

The third strange thing

At last they reached a town. They were tired and hungry, and they asked the people for food. Every household refused to host them.

Then, in that same town, they found a wall that was close to falling down. The older traveler repaired it, with no payment and no thanks.

The young traveler could no longer be silent. “You could at least have asked for something in return, after the way they treated us.”

The older traveler said, “This is where we part. But before I go, I will tell you what lay behind everything you could not understand.”

I may not understand why the road changed, but I can still trust the One who knows where it is going.

The reasons behind it all

“The boat belonged to poor people, who earned their living from the sea. Ahead of us was a king who was taking every good boat by force. I damaged it so that it would be left alone. What looked like harm was what protected their only source of income.

“The boy had parents who were good and faithful. I knew that if he lived, he would grow up to burden them with rebellion and hardship. We hoped their Lord would give them a child who was purer and kinder in his place.

“As for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the town. Beneath it was a treasure left by their righteous father. If the wall had fallen, the treasure would have been exposed and lost before they were old enough to protect it. So their Lord wished that they reach maturity and take out what was theirs.

“None of this was my own doing. I acted by command. This is the meaning of what you could not be patient with.”

What the people never knew

Here is the part that stays with me.

The owners of that boat never heard this explanation. They only knew that their boat was damaged and that they had to repair it. The parents of that child never met the older traveler to learn why. They lived with the grief, the wishes and the unanswered questions. The orphans probably never knew that a wall was repaired for them.

That is how it usually goes for us. Most of the things that hurt us come with no explanation at the time. We lose something, we ask why, and nobody answers. We keep living with the sorrow, wishes and the questions.

Only the traveler who had been given knowledge by the Owner of the universe knew what was really happening.

Everything has a hidden purpose

I don’t tell this story to make the loss feel small. Loss is real. Disappointment is real. It is human to wonder and to ache.

What I take from it is quieter: just because we can’t see the reason doesn’t mean there isn’t one.

  • The job you didn’t get may have been a boat with a king waiting ahead.
  • The friendship that ended may have been a wall protecting something you couldn’t see yet.
  • The delay that frustrated you may have been timing you were not ready to understand.

We see one small part of the road. The One who writes our lives sees all of it, from the start to the very last chapter. If we believe that He is wise and merciful, then trusting His timing is not giving up. It is a form of strength.

So when something doesn’t make sense, I try to remind myself: I am the young traveler. I have not seen the whole map. I can ask my questions, I can feel my sadness, and I can still keep walking with trust.

A small reflection for you

Think of one thing in your life that once felt like a loss and later turned out to have a purpose. What changed your view of it?

And now, a question for the curious:

Who do you think the two travelers in this story were? Share your guess in the comments below. I’ll be reading every one.
